Album Review: DIM - THE GAZETTE

I wrote this for the Lolita E-zine (I'll link you when it's out). I may do a condensed version of this, but so far, this is what I'm going with.

Dim - The GazettE

Gothic lolita is, along with Victorian times and Alice in Wonderland, inspired by the aesthetics of Visual Kei. The GazettE are one of Japan's established internationally famed bands of the genre who went in a new – moodier, heavier and more concept based direction with their seventh album…Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Complementing the idea of a concept album, Dim is full of interludes. From the cold and haunting「剥離」to to even feature a crying baby in 「子宮」. The GazettE really know how to elicit emotion and invoke curiosity with such simplicity and distortion.

Previously released Leech and Distress and Coma fail to disappoint. Leech is a hard rock song with female vocals that feels like a live song fans would jump up and down to. The scream in the middle appears to be the song’s peak, but it does not die off after and ends louder with explosive life. Distress and Coma is a track that is predictable, but ensures the standard formula is done the right way. 紅蓮 is a shorter J-rock ballad, also previously released, that sounds similar to Burial Applicant and/or Baretta. The drumming stands out most to me at its quietest and the guitar solo fits, though I feel the lyrics were intended to be the most significant part.

Headache Man is probably my favorite song off Dim with it’s metalcore sound – heavy and made for headbanging, in your face and includes an Unholy Confessions-esque breakdown. It might be volume over intricacy but still the most enjoyable. If you didn’t get a headache from it, you’ll like Ogre, too. The slowed down grunge-like 13STAIRS[-]1 retains its heaviness and speeds up in the middle with protesting vocals that alternate screaming, shouting and whispering plus dueling guitars wonderfully fit in the “bad connection” effects that refuse to hear ignorant judgment of those who criticize the genre. In the Middle of Chaos would be great to see live. Though simplistic, it’s more cheerful and fun.

The Invisible Wall is average. They could have chosen a better track to kick off the album with, but even the song improves as it progresses through the sorrowful and desperate emotions it exudes. I like the Metallica-like A Moth Under the Skin, due to Reita’s bass-led intro. The rhythm seems like it would be excellent live, but ended with a boring fade out.

Dim balances the fast with the ballads, though. 泣ヶ原 is a 7-minute long one that is worth overcoming impatience for as it is a beautiful break from the previous Leech; or perhaps the mosh pit when seen live. Maybe Dim was written in the live concert frame of mind after all. A slower tempo, however does not mean a decreased intensity that has an impeccable construction as the bridges and breaks are in all the right places. 白き優鬱 has violins, acoustic guitars and a solo where it should be. It’s calm and mellow but ends very nicely.

The album ends way better than it started, with one of its best songs. Dim Scene seems influenced by Dir en Grey and starts off slowly, this time with an orchestra. The way the echoing violins fade off into rolling drums that get bigger, the guitars burst louder and the vocals come to life. Dim Scene could have been a long epic song, I suppose five minutes is enough, and the conclusion faded off nicely. Overall, Dim is sinister yet brilliant.

answers?

Due to my observation that every blog needs a niche, a central topic to go about to make it easier on the blogger's own life and reader's.

Then I realized I don't have one. Sure, I'm allowed to like a whole lot of things, but it seems simpler to focus on one.

Music?
Fashion?
Inspiration (those quote/photography/positivity/art/tumblr types)?

I'm a little lost. Any suggestions?

OMONATHEYDIDN'T!

Oh dear, I've been late, very late. My sincerest apologies for my failure to update for a month.

So after a bad haircut, the going-aways of several friends and reformatting on my laptop... I'm back and going to stop procrastinating... Update more often! YES!

This website may be old news, considering i discovered it at the start of the year.. But I only found something to post with my discussion of it today, so there! ^__^

Rebecca
and I were so bored one day that we invented a webcam game inspired by the Asian Poses site that goes into insane detailed descriptions and studies of hand gestures we Asians (though most mastered by FOB's) spam when in front of a camera. We did all 28 in about an hour or less ;)

Here is the result of our game:

Does anyone else have webcam games/lol stories to tell? :)

Things I Love Thursday

Exams and art boards have been taking up my time, most unfortunately. But
while I procrastinate...
I'll recap my holiday in another post, but this should entertain you for the
time being.

-My new favorite tumblr is fuckyeahpokememe. It
brings the LULZ, especially the Pokebooks (pictured above)... and everyone knows I love
Pokemon x]

-SkeletalFashion! perhaps a "homage to super skinny models", I find these pretty
awesome. Especially the ribcage necklace and the t-shirt!:)

-Gala'sMagical Guide to Getting Well is something I may try next time I get
sick. Hopefully that doesn't happen anytime soon though!

-"The World of Tomorrow, if the Internet Disappeared Today" is an amusing contest that asked participants to photoshop what they think would happen... WE'D ALL GET RICKROLLED :O

-MY ART BOARDS BEING FINISHED, I can now sleep at normal hours instead of working until 2am ^____^

-Making mix CD's. Since I'm sure he won't see this, YES THAT'S YOUR 5MONTH PRESENT (we give gifts/cards every month. no idea why besides it being fun). This is the tracklist; 19 ways to say i love you :")

-My new Hangry & Angry hooded cutsew from Hong Kong. IT HAS EARS<3 href="http://www.frockandrollonline.com/blog/i-thought-it-was-love-at-the-time-but-tales-of-wardrobe-throw-outs/">"Wardrobe Throw-Outs" and tulip-shaped skirts.

-QuoteForTruth is my friend Vivian's vox. She has an actual quote book full of them she brings to school, and I'm assuming this will be full of its contents. It's cute. Go click :)

Enjoy for now, I have to... study T___T

Travel Packing: SHORT TRIPS

Tomorrow evening I will be flying to Dunedin for a five-day stay... and I haven't started packing. I'll get around to it.. Eventually ;)

credit

1. Luggage:
- Trunks (or trunk type suitcases) are nice, solid and best choice aesthetically. But while they're very pleasant on the eyes, they're not so fun to carry unless you want sore arms. Of course, if you have someone carrying them for you that shouldn't be a problem ;)
- Duffel bags, larger than gym-size of course should be lighter but cannot carry as much. It also encourages wrinkles and things like wine-glasses may break if not bubble-wrapped (or covered in clothes) properly.
- Suitcases with wheels are probably your prime choice. They come in many shapes and forms and the wheels mean it's easier to bring along.

* TIP: try not to get a standard black/navy blue one that looks just like everyone elses because more likely than not, someone may take your luggage by mistake because it looks like theirs. But if yours DOES look like that, it helps to tie a ribbon or something identifiably yours on it so you can find it on the baggage carousel easily.

2. Before you pack, you MUST:
- check the weather forecast and have an idea of what it will be like - coats, y/n?
- know how long you will be there for so you have enough clothes to last you the entire time
- consider: will you be doing a lot of shopping? If so, don't fill your suitcase up. Leave some space for your potential purchases.

3. When dismantling your closet, here are some things to remember:
- ALWAYS take a jacket/coat/hoodie because you never know when the temperature will drop.
- choose pieces that can be worked in several ways so you don't have to bring so many.
- try not to bring more than 2 pairs of shoes, and wear the heaviest on the plane.

* TIP: roll your clothes and tie them with rubber bands. it saves space and reduces wrinkles.

*EXAMPLE: my packing list (still in the works) includes...

  • white fleece jacket
  • black bossini dress
  • wrangler jeans
  • denim shorts
  • opaque black stockings
  • b&w checkered scarf (yes, THOSE LOL)
  • striped long sleeve top
  • grey cardigan
  • from first to last t-shirt
  • black converse
  • green 3/4 sleeve top
how it can be made to last 5 days:
1. dress + stockings
2. dress + jeans
3. t-shirt over long-sleeve + shorts + stockings
4. long sleeve + jeans
5. green top + shorts + stockings
...and the jacket/cardigan/scarf can be added depending on how cold it is.

others:

  • the usual: sleepwear; underwear (DO NOT FORGET)
  • toiletries: eyeliners in black, white and green; toothbrush; hairbrush & comb; gatsby moving rubber (though i probably can't take a straightener.. but I'll live!);
*TIP: if you carry shampoos or perfume, try and transfer them to smaller travel-sized containers :)
  • a smaller bag to carry your stuff around every day: keep wallet, cellphone, camera, hotel key, shades in.
  • CHARGERS!!! for your cellphone and camera. Worst that could happen is a camera dies on holiday with no spare battery.
  • entertainment: a handheld like NDS/PSP or music players are great; but this 1-hour flight I'm just taking 2 packets of star folding paper I have to make... as well as *sigh* my maths books from school because I have to study for an exam in 2 weeks. Wish me luck >o<
...I think I've covered the important stuff, hopefully I haven't forgotten anything! >w< Thoughts?

tabs to open until your browser explodes.

- Clint Eastwood in Coraline 2? For more random Coraline things such as button keys, dolls and even cosplays, head to you'll like evilbuttons ;)

- Tim Burton collaborates with Tim Walker for a Harper's Bazaar October 2009 spread. I have to say, Tricks & Treats is pretty fucking cool.

- Alex Pardee, the excellent artist whose talents you may recognize from The Used and In Flames album covers does sweet stuff for Zerofriends (toys, shirts, mugs, you name it!) and now they're looking for some help in filming the brand's first commercial. Keen to help out?

- If you are one of the few who have not discovered You Are Remarkable yet, now may be a good time to check it out. It's cute, and helps lift your spirits.

- But on a less positive note, Chiodos have kicked out Craig Owens. :O
- The Used are giving away massive Bus Bench ads for their latest album Artwork. WANT ONE?
Also, if you haven't heard the album yet... Check it out. My favorites are Empty With You and Born to Quit.
- The Secret Society of List Addicts. I know people from the listography.com community will like it. Ideas for MORE LISTS OMGLOL. I know I do ;)

Things I Love Thursday

- Term break! Last day of school for a 2 week break tomorrow :)
Unfortunately I have to study because exams are coming up veerrryyyy soon after I return, but... there's always SLEEPING IN!

- Trivium are playing Powerstation next February!
This makes me very happy because earlier this year I was complaining how they toured Australia with Black Tide and not New Zealand. They're hitting Auckland and Christchurch with Whitechapel. Keen? The best part is that I get to hang out with Kc again, who I haven't seen for a year! ^__^
Other sweet bands coming downunder include Bad Religion/NoFX/Pour Habit and Slayer/Megadeth next weekend, The Ataris and Poison The Well in October, Arch Enemy and Pearl Jam in November and Green Day in December. Next year starts off well too with Underoath/Switchfoot at Parachute, AC/DC(!!!) and Cobra Starship.

- Mi Goreng Instant Noodles. Self explanatory. They're nearly as good as Nong Shim x]

- "Angry Fan Doesn't Realize It's Bert" is funny. Imagine how douchey and regretful you would feel if you realized you raged at your own favorite band while wearing their shirt. FAIL! XD

- Epik High parodies the monster movie "The Host" in their new music video, Wannabe.

Things I Love Thursday

Sorry for the lack of posts, I'm really slack aren't I? >_<>happy because:

- I'm going to see Bad Religion & NoFX in a week and 2 days time, thanks to my wonderful friends who got me a ticket for my birthday last month. I love you guys! :) I spent my birthday as a birthday weekend and it was PRO! August 28(to 29), 2009 will be a hard one to beat ;D

- My leng jai is back from SG! Five days seemed like a long time; with the way I wipe out the 2degrees sim card's free credit on just texting in under a day ._.

- For the first time, I'm watching Skins. I always heard it was good but never got the chance to watch it because I kept forgetting what time it was on TV. Good thing D.Leech torrented it and gave me the entire first season for free (while he charged the guy who asked him to download it $15. ZING!) I'll elaborate once I'm done x]

- I've been feeling productive.. Last weekend I started customizing Chucks again, and this time with acrylic paints. I did Bullet For My Valentine's Hand of Blood CD art on it and finished in a day :)

- Gatsby Moving Rubber! I know, it's nothing new to either you nor me but I love my Gatsby's, they're uber awesome. Great hair product. Harold has coined mine "stylish morning hair" hahahahaha. Unfortunately, my layers are not short enough to replicate KT. In time I'll get another trim, in time more posts will come.

Something cohesively themed soon.. and a bunch of links. I know you love pretty or BRING THE LULZ clickables as much as I do. Off to watch Skins now! :)

P.S. If anybody wants to exchange links (I'll create a list on the sidebar in time), just comment!

covered: a revolution in sound

I procrastinate everything, not just studying. This includes folding laundry. So I decided to type this post with a pile of shirts on my lap and will fold a shirt after every paragraph.

First off, I have to tell you to check out Avenged Sevenfold's cover of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. It's my current addiction and I have it on repeat all day.

I like the instrumentals of A7X's version better because they liven it up but I think Ozzy's vocals suit the song better. He just has that ~feel that matches it.

Download it for free here.

It's part of the "Covered, A Revolution in Sound" compilation of recent artists' covers of classic songs associated with Warner Bros. Records artists over the past 50 years to celbrated WBR's 50th anniversary.

My other favorites off it are Disturbed's cover of FNM's Midlife Crisis and Against Me!'s Here Comes a Regular.

You can stream the entire tracklist here.

On another note, I always have this long list of songs to download or bands to go give a listen to.
Today's reccommendations for you (I know they aren't new bands, but they don't receive that much attention from the general public so I thought you should give them a listen) are:

1. Jawbreaker (Punk/Post-Punk)
2. the Gazette (Japanese Visual-Kei)
3. Dillinger Four (Punk/Post-Punk)
4. Reel Big Fish (Ska)
5. Girugamesh (Japanese Metal)

I was playing around with Last.FM radio and discovered number 3 and 5 that way. You should try it ;P

Things I Love Thursday

credit: ventisette

Gala Darling started it and many people and their blogs followed. I noticed my lack of posting so I guess I should start this thing because little things always make it worthwhile in the end.

- Talking to a friend I haven't seen in about 3 years again and realizing we like the same music now (THRICE!) Oh I guess Bebo isn't too bad after all... ^_^

- Said friend reccommended a band called Boyce Avenue to me and they're pretty good, check out their cover of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. It sounds nearly identical!

- Flickr SETTING SETS FREE. Since my broadband provider's flickr pro promo never semeed to work on my computer, I am stoked that I (along with all the other free users) can finally organize my pictures into more than 3 sets :) Unlimited sets? Yes please!

- FML (aka Fuck My Life) has some of the funniest shit around! When you're having a bad day, go read all the short hilarious ~melancholies and your mood will instantly lift.
For example, "Today, my grandmother patched up my $300, vintage, limited edition, designer jeans because she thought I'd accidently ripped them. FML"
and/or
"Today, my wife told me that she wanted a divorce. It is also my 39th birthday today. For my birthday present, she gave me a subscription to match.com. FML"
Click away and enjoy. You are not alone xD
- Coraline toys: While I am really annoyed that it is not out in New Zealand yet nor are its posters anywhere in the cinemas, I have this thing for cool toys and these happen to be some of them. 5 months until birthday? ;P

- Time off classes. An art trip on Monday and half-day today to go to the dentist for fifteen minutes. ZING!

subhuman nature fulfills human wants

I fail for not posting in a long time. But this one is really good.

If you like my kind of music (aka a whole lotta different kinds of rock), you will adore Subhuman Nature as much as I do.

Discovered through Nicole's finding a rapidshare link of (one of the few decent local) NZ band Addison's EP, My clicking away was rewarded very well.

It's like being in a music lover's candy store, only the candies are FREE. Subhuman Nature offers free downloads to albums and EP's of HEAPS of bands organized by genre whether new or known. It's a great way to discover new music and dig up old favorites (props for the Reel Big Fish!)

Sure, I go out and buy my CD's when I like the band enough and have the money; but I download music too. I think all these DL's actually help the band - since the record label makes most of the profits from album sales, downloading provides the band free exposure and leaves fans with extra money for MERCH and CONCERT TICKETS which actually help them more (:

After all, who wants to spend $20 on one that you listen to and end up hating?
Keep the music alive, go to shows and of course, feel free to buy the records too... They look nice on your shelf and have better quality than MP3's ;)

Trent Reznor would know.

here goes the genie...

Today, I stumbled across http://www.photojojo.com/ through my friend's 365 project on tumblr, and boy was I hooked! I spent this afternoon clicking through interesting articles, funny manips and amusing ideas to try!

From practical guides like Capturing motion in photography; to fun ones, such as: Scratch-N-See: Vandalize Photos in the Name of Art.

They also have mean DIY projects for making flipbooks and The Perpetual Photo Wall Calendar.

For those who are not really into photography as an art, but just to capture memories of people for their Christmas cards, MySpace or blackmail... There are links to Tricks For Taking Good Group Photos, and Taking Family Portraits That Break The Rules, reiterating the fact that candids are always nicer to look back on than posed shots ;)

Kill boredom and monotony, try and laugh at yourself once in awhile with links to silly manips and face drawings: Send This Guy Your Face, Put your face on any magazine. Also, I bet you didn't know your camera is the new gameboy- Play Games With Your Camera.

For street style bloggers and photographers, here's an easy way of getting willing people to pose for your shots: How To Shoot Street Portraits. If anybody decides to sue you because you are shooting them without permission, you might want to read this so you can wave it in their faces.

Yes, we love music. We love live music even more. But we hate it when security people are telling us we can't take photos of our favorite band. But rule 10 says:

"If someone tries to confiscate your camera and/or film, you don’t have to give it to them. If they take it by force or threaten you, they can be liable for things like theft and coercion. Even law enforcement officers need a court order."

Seems like my friend shouldn't have given up her memory stick after all!
PhotoJojo has a short but sweet guide on capturing the concert experience, with more detailed venue size-specific links in the article. I found this useful.

... and when I found this, I started regretting my deleting dozens of shoe photos I've taken on holidays or walks in the mall when I was clearing out my hard drive. Time to start again.

I reckon the best place to start is the 22 New Year's Photo Resolutions. Simple but effective to try. I'm doing this one, starting with organizing everything onto my new External HD!

I hope my PanaLumix doesn't take a beating... xD

♫ Wake The Dead - The Used

P.S. I couldn't help but link one last article I found super cool- . One of my favorites ^_^

Poupee Girl: Insanely Addictive

I found Poupee Girl (yes, funny name when you say it aloud, harhar.) while blog-hopping, read a random one talking about her Poupee account.. so I signed up and ended up stuck on it for 3 HOURS.

It's kinda like a doll site crossed with chictopia, and costs nothing for 'ribbons', their currency.
When you sign up, you customize the appearance of your doll/person - hair, eyes, skin tone, etc.But you start off with nothing in your closet.

To give your doll some dignity, you have to upload photos of YOUR (yes, YOURS as in real-life) items - clothes, hats, shoes, toys, etc.
By doing so, you earn some 'ribbons' and free items as an incentive. I think they're made to be similar to the pictures you uploaded as mine were black, white and red on the first uploads =_=".

It is worthy to note, though, that there IS a limit to daily posting for rewards. Once you post something and don't get anything for it, STOP AT ONCE and wait until tomorrow to continue doing so.

Sometimes, you get SHELLS instead of wearables. Please don't make the same mistake I did by selling the duplicates. When you have collected 5 shells, go to the fountain and throw them in for a ~FREE ITEM. *headdesk*

Another free way to obtain ribbons is by saving your daily snapshot. Drag and drop the clothes onto your person like a paper doll and click save snapshot. ONE EASY RIBBON.

Not to worry, most of the site is in English; but most of the users are Japanese. It won't be much of a worry to those who can't read it, though. The comments usually say similar compliments like kawaii (cute), ai (love) or similar things. After all, why comment it if you didn't like it?

The SUTEKI button under an item is for you to click on if you like it; suteki meaning COOL in Japanese. It's like adding "Hype" to a lookbook outfit.

Your ribbons are used to buy items either from the Poupee Market (off other users, where you can also sell) or Katharine Shop; the ONLY "shop" on the game, much like a department store.

BUT BE QUICK!
I'm playing while typing this out and items are bought just like that *snaps fingers*.

Oh, and for Purikura aka Neoprint freaks like myself, I discovered recently that they had a Pupecula, Poupee Girl's version of sticker pictures that you can even drag and drop Pupe friends you've added on the site to!

I wish you the best of luck with backing away from the computer once you've started. It's silly but addictive.

P.S. If anyone has a fedora, I'm interested! (nickname = shinigami)

The only thing people enjoy as much as reading someone else's diary is leafing through their own old journals, laughing at their past; and what better way to make the activity more entertaining than it is; than keeping a SPIFFY MOLESKINE.

Why yes, that moleskine rage sweeping nations. Thanks to its dedicated followers sharing the moleskine love on the internet, the limitless uses can be fuelled by insane numbers of inspiration, ideas and simply eye candy online, like:

~ Moly_X: an international moleskine sketchbook exchange
~ My Moleskine
~ Moleskine Alchemists
~ Moleskine: One Page at a Time
~ Moleskinerie
~ jr__nal
... and many more! Just search 'moleskine' on either Livejournal.com or Flickr.com and you'll have HEAPS of results.

Ideas:

- a dream/wishlist book to stick or draw pictures of things you want to have/do/own/achieve and tick them off as you accomplish them. Keep adding over time and shock yourself with how much you've actually done!

- a fashion notebook for collecting loads of pictures to inspire you, whether it's clothes, makeup, hairstyles, shoes, photography... ANYTHING! Designers use these to help them come up with new ideas, and you can also use it as a reference for when you want a certain, say, haircut! ^_^ You can even have a What I Wore Today with a daily polaroid!

- a city guide which you should fill with anything and everything about, in and from a certain place. Maybe even include a shopping directory or glue business cards of restaurants you loved with a mouth watering illustration of the tasty meal you had. Watch out, Lonely Planet: Moleskines are the new tour guidebooks!

- a book of friends, like an autograph book or dedication book, you get your favorite people to fill in stuff about themselves and write you a cute/stupid/funny little note. You can designate each friend a page in the journal, let them take it home overnight to spice up in any way they like, pictures and whatnot with the usual writing using a page or double-page each. It's more personal than a yearbook and requires minimal effort on your part!

- speak a thousand words by filling your journal with lyrics and quotes you love, complemented by a matching drawing alongside. For added eye candy, write them in fancy or messy handwriting. Maybe an idea for a future tattoo? Possibly...

- immortalising your inner fangirl/boy by keeping old concert tickets, photos and/or magazine clippings of (and with! If you've met them) your favorite musician/actor/celebrity/etc. Write an imaginary letter (which you may end up sending one day, who knows?) or simply rant and rave about a new album or movie. Hilarious? I know mine would be.

The possibilities are ENDLESS, but instead of wasting your time reading about what you could do with your moleskine; get to it now and freeze in time a little piece of the current you in its pages.

Tell me, what do you use your moleskines for?
Because I'm sure you're more creative than I am ;)

2009

credit: sloshspot

I have decided to start the new year on a clean slate and stop harboring resentment.
I am going to do things that I keep saying I will do but never seem to act on them.

One of those things is this:
Revive the use of blogspot; not for my personal ramblings and blow by blow of daily life so I can look back on them a little later and laugh at myself, but the kind made for anyone to read.

This year, I want to be inspired.

2008 proved wishes do come true.
Surprise me, 2009.
