Album Review: DIM - THE GAZETTE

I wrote this for the Lolita E-zine (I'll link you when it's out). I may do a condensed version of this, but so far, this is what I'm going with.

Dim - The GazettE

Gothic lolita is, along with Victorian times and Alice in Wonderland, inspired by the aesthetics of Visual Kei. The GazettE are one of Japan's established internationally famed bands of the genre who went in a new – moodier, heavier and more concept based direction with their seventh album…Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Complementing the idea of a concept album, Dim is full of interludes. From the cold and haunting「剥離」to to even feature a crying baby in 「子宮」. The GazettE really know how to elicit emotion and invoke curiosity with such simplicity and distortion.

Previously released Leech and Distress and Coma fail to disappoint. Leech is a hard rock song with female vocals that feels like a live song fans would jump up and down to. The scream in the middle appears to be the song’s peak, but it does not die off after and ends louder with explosive life. Distress and Coma is a track that is predictable, but ensures the standard formula is done the right way. 紅蓮 is a shorter J-rock ballad, also previously released, that sounds similar to Burial Applicant and/or Baretta. The drumming stands out most to me at its quietest and the guitar solo fits, though I feel the lyrics were intended to be the most significant part.

Headache Man is probably my favorite song off Dim with it’s metalcore sound – heavy and made for headbanging, in your face and includes an Unholy Confessions-esque breakdown. It might be volume over intricacy but still the most enjoyable. If you didn’t get a headache from it, you’ll like Ogre, too. The slowed down grunge-like 13STAIRS[-]1 retains its heaviness and speeds up in the middle with protesting vocals that alternate screaming, shouting and whispering plus dueling guitars wonderfully fit in the “bad connection” effects that refuse to hear ignorant judgment of those who criticize the genre. In the Middle of Chaos would be great to see live. Though simplistic, it’s more cheerful and fun.

The Invisible Wall is average. They could have chosen a better track to kick off the album with, but even the song improves as it progresses through the sorrowful and desperate emotions it exudes. I like the Metallica-like A Moth Under the Skin, due to Reita’s bass-led intro. The rhythm seems like it would be excellent live, but ended with a boring fade out.

Dim balances the fast with the ballads, though. 泣ヶ原 is a 7-minute long one that is worth overcoming impatience for as it is a beautiful break from the previous Leech; or perhaps the mosh pit when seen live. Maybe Dim was written in the live concert frame of mind after all. A slower tempo, however does not mean a decreased intensity that has an impeccable construction as the bridges and breaks are in all the right places. 白き優鬱 has violins, acoustic guitars and a solo where it should be. It’s calm and mellow but ends very nicely.

The album ends way better than it started, with one of its best songs. Dim Scene seems influenced by Dir en Grey and starts off slowly, this time with an orchestra. The way the echoing violins fade off into rolling drums that get bigger, the guitars burst louder and the vocals come to life. Dim Scene could have been a long epic song, I suppose five minutes is enough, and the conclusion faded off nicely. Overall, Dim is sinister yet brilliant.

Things I Love Thursday

Exams and art boards have been taking up my time, most unfortunately. But
while I procrastinate...
I'll recap my holiday in another post, but this should entertain you for the
time being.

-My new favorite tumblr is fuckyeahpokememe. It
brings the LULZ, especially the Pokebooks (pictured above)... and everyone knows I love
Pokemon x]

-SkeletalFashion! perhaps a "homage to super skinny models", I find these pretty
awesome. Especially the ribcage necklace and the t-shirt!:)

-Gala'sMagical Guide to Getting Well is something I may try next time I get
sick. Hopefully that doesn't happen anytime soon though!

-"The World of Tomorrow, if the Internet Disappeared Today" is an amusing contest that asked participants to photoshop what they think would happen... WE'D ALL GET RICKROLLED :O

-MY ART BOARDS BEING FINISHED, I can now sleep at normal hours instead of working until 2am ^____^

-Making mix CD's. Since I'm sure he won't see this, YES THAT'S YOUR 5MONTH PRESENT (we give gifts/cards every month. no idea why besides it being fun). This is the tracklist; 19 ways to say i love you :")

-My new Hangry & Angry hooded cutsew from Hong Kong. IT HAS EARS<3 href="http://www.frockandrollonline.com/blog/i-thought-it-was-love-at-the-time-but-tales-of-wardrobe-throw-outs/">"Wardrobe Throw-Outs" and tulip-shaped skirts.

-QuoteForTruth is my friend Vivian's vox. She has an actual quote book full of them she brings to school, and I'm assuming this will be full of its contents. It's cute. Go click :)

Enjoy for now, I have to... study T___T

tabs to open until your browser explodes.

- Clint Eastwood in Coraline 2? For more random Coraline things such as button keys, dolls and even cosplays, head to you'll like evilbuttons ;)

- Tim Burton collaborates with Tim Walker for a Harper's Bazaar October 2009 spread. I have to say, Tricks & Treats is pretty fucking cool.

- Alex Pardee, the excellent artist whose talents you may recognize from The Used and In Flames album covers does sweet stuff for Zerofriends (toys, shirts, mugs, you name it!) and now they're looking for some help in filming the brand's first commercial. Keen to help out?

- If you are one of the few who have not discovered You Are Remarkable yet, now may be a good time to check it out. It's cute, and helps lift your spirits.

- But on a less positive note, Chiodos have kicked out Craig Owens. :O
- The Used are giving away massive Bus Bench ads for their latest album Artwork. WANT ONE?
Also, if you haven't heard the album yet... Check it out. My favorites are Empty With You and Born to Quit.
- The Secret Society of List Addicts. I know people from the listography.com community will like it. Ideas for MORE LISTS OMGLOL. I know I do ;)

Things I Love Thursday

- Term break! Last day of school for a 2 week break tomorrow :)
Unfortunately I have to study because exams are coming up veerrryyyy soon after I return, but... there's always SLEEPING IN!

- Trivium are playing Powerstation next February!
This makes me very happy because earlier this year I was complaining how they toured Australia with Black Tide and not New Zealand. They're hitting Auckland and Christchurch with Whitechapel. Keen? The best part is that I get to hang out with Kc again, who I haven't seen for a year! ^__^
Other sweet bands coming downunder include Bad Religion/NoFX/Pour Habit and Slayer/Megadeth next weekend, The Ataris and Poison The Well in October, Arch Enemy and Pearl Jam in November and Green Day in December. Next year starts off well too with Underoath/Switchfoot at Parachute, AC/DC(!!!) and Cobra Starship.

- Mi Goreng Instant Noodles. Self explanatory. They're nearly as good as Nong Shim x]

- "Angry Fan Doesn't Realize It's Bert" is funny. Imagine how douchey and regretful you would feel if you realized you raged at your own favorite band while wearing their shirt. FAIL! XD

- Epik High parodies the monster movie "The Host" in their new music video, Wannabe.

Things I Love Thursday

Sorry for the lack of posts, I'm really slack aren't I? >_<>happy because:

- I'm going to see Bad Religion & NoFX in a week and 2 days time, thanks to my wonderful friends who got me a ticket for my birthday last month. I love you guys! :) I spent my birthday as a birthday weekend and it was PRO! August 28(to 29), 2009 will be a hard one to beat ;D

- My leng jai is back from SG! Five days seemed like a long time; with the way I wipe out the 2degrees sim card's free credit on just texting in under a day ._.

- For the first time, I'm watching Skins. I always heard it was good but never got the chance to watch it because I kept forgetting what time it was on TV. Good thing D.Leech torrented it and gave me the entire first season for free (while he charged the guy who asked him to download it $15. ZING!) I'll elaborate once I'm done x]

- I've been feeling productive.. Last weekend I started customizing Chucks again, and this time with acrylic paints. I did Bullet For My Valentine's Hand of Blood CD art on it and finished in a day :)

- Gatsby Moving Rubber! I know, it's nothing new to either you nor me but I love my Gatsby's, they're uber awesome. Great hair product. Harold has coined mine "stylish morning hair" hahahahaha. Unfortunately, my layers are not short enough to replicate KT. In time I'll get another trim, in time more posts will come.

Something cohesively themed soon.. and a bunch of links. I know you love pretty or BRING THE LULZ clickables as much as I do. Off to watch Skins now! :)

P.S. If anybody wants to exchange links (I'll create a list on the sidebar in time), just comment!

covered: a revolution in sound

I procrastinate everything, not just studying. This includes folding laundry. So I decided to type this post with a pile of shirts on my lap and will fold a shirt after every paragraph.

First off, I have to tell you to check out Avenged Sevenfold's cover of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. It's my current addiction and I have it on repeat all day.

I like the instrumentals of A7X's version better because they liven it up but I think Ozzy's vocals suit the song better. He just has that ~feel that matches it.

Download it for free here.

It's part of the "Covered, A Revolution in Sound" compilation of recent artists' covers of classic songs associated with Warner Bros. Records artists over the past 50 years to celbrated WBR's 50th anniversary.

My other favorites off it are Disturbed's cover of FNM's Midlife Crisis and Against Me!'s Here Comes a Regular.

You can stream the entire tracklist here.

On another note, I always have this long list of songs to download or bands to go give a listen to.
Today's reccommendations for you (I know they aren't new bands, but they don't receive that much attention from the general public so I thought you should give them a listen) are:

1. Jawbreaker (Punk/Post-Punk)
2. the Gazette (Japanese Visual-Kei)
3. Dillinger Four (Punk/Post-Punk)
4. Reel Big Fish (Ska)
5. Girugamesh (Japanese Metal)

I was playing around with Last.FM radio and discovered number 3 and 5 that way. You should try it ;P

Things I Love Thursday

credit: ventisette

Gala Darling started it and many people and their blogs followed. I noticed my lack of posting so I guess I should start this thing because little things always make it worthwhile in the end.

- Talking to a friend I haven't seen in about 3 years again and realizing we like the same music now (THRICE!) Oh I guess Bebo isn't too bad after all... ^_^

- Said friend reccommended a band called Boyce Avenue to me and they're pretty good, check out their cover of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. It sounds nearly identical!

- Flickr SETTING SETS FREE. Since my broadband provider's flickr pro promo never semeed to work on my computer, I am stoked that I (along with all the other free users) can finally organize my pictures into more than 3 sets :) Unlimited sets? Yes please!

- FML (aka Fuck My Life) has some of the funniest shit around! When you're having a bad day, go read all the short hilarious ~melancholies and your mood will instantly lift.
For example, "Today, my grandmother patched up my $300, vintage, limited edition, designer jeans because she thought I'd accidently ripped them. FML"
and/or
"Today, my wife told me that she wanted a divorce. It is also my 39th birthday today. For my birthday present, she gave me a subscription to match.com. FML"
Click away and enjoy. You are not alone xD
- Coraline toys: While I am really annoyed that it is not out in New Zealand yet nor are its posters anywhere in the cinemas, I have this thing for cool toys and these happen to be some of them. 5 months until birthday? ;P

- Time off classes. An art trip on Monday and half-day today to go to the dentist for fifteen minutes. ZING!

subhuman nature fulfills human wants

I fail for not posting in a long time. But this one is really good.

If you like my kind of music (aka a whole lotta different kinds of rock), you will adore Subhuman Nature as much as I do.

Discovered through Nicole's finding a rapidshare link of (one of the few decent local) NZ band Addison's EP, My clicking away was rewarded very well.

It's like being in a music lover's candy store, only the candies are FREE. Subhuman Nature offers free downloads to albums and EP's of HEAPS of bands organized by genre whether new or known. It's a great way to discover new music and dig up old favorites (props for the Reel Big Fish!)

Sure, I go out and buy my CD's when I like the band enough and have the money; but I download music too. I think all these DL's actually help the band - since the record label makes most of the profits from album sales, downloading provides the band free exposure and leaves fans with extra money for MERCH and CONCERT TICKETS which actually help them more (:

After all, who wants to spend $20 on one that you listen to and end up hating?
Keep the music alive, go to shows and of course, feel free to buy the records too... They look nice on your shelf and have better quality than MP3's ;)

Trent Reznor would know.
